Samprathi '09

The two-day National Seminar - Samprathi '09 concluded here today with the valedictory function at 3:45 P.M. at the Eric Mathias Hall of St. Aloysius College (Autonomous), Mangalore. The program began with the theme song lead by the MSW students followed by the welcome address by Ms. Loveena Lobo, HOD - Dept. of MSW.

Ms. Giselle D Mehtha, Ex. IRS was the Chief Guest, Rev. Fr. Swebert D'Silva, Principal - St. Aloysius College presided over the function. Rev. Fr. Francis D'Almeida, Dean MSW was also present on the dias along with Ms Shwetha Rasquinha, Convenor and Prajwal Sebastian, Student Convenor. A floral welcome was given to the dignitaries.

Ms. Shilpa Cutinha, Faculty MSW presented the report of the two-day seminar. Later some participants expressed their views of Samprathi '09, and the participation certificates were distributed.

"Today we have 40% of daliths, poor, refugees and other down trodden and marginalized people whose life is in great difficulty; are we ready to respond to their need being MSW students?" questioned Fr. Francis D'Almedia in the Dean's Address. "The answer depends on us; A change is what we need" he added.

Speaking on Modern Life Style in the Chief Guests'Adress Ms. Giselle Mehtha said that "We can moderate the change rather than changing ".

"Discerning spirit to find out what is good and right is not enough, one must have the guts to choose what is good and right" said Fr. Swebert in the presidential address. "We have to become agents of change and change must come from the younger generation" he added.

The program concluded by a vote of thanks by Ms Shwetha Rasquinha, Convenor followed by the National Anthem.

Earlier on September 24, the inaugural program began with invoking God's blessings through a Prayer song, later Ms. Shwetha Rasquinha, Convenor extended a cordial welcome to the dignitaries and the delegates.

Rev. Fr. Francis D'Almeida, Dean - MSW Department, explained the significance of the seminar and stressed on the need of changing the existing mindsets and thinking pattern in building up a better society.

Rev. Fr Swebert D'Silva, Principal St Aloysius College stressed on the fact that lifestyle is a mixture of habits that builds-up character and a person's image, and exhorted the gathering to discover the different lifestyles that helps each one to lead a healthy and comfortable way of life.

Later in the thematic inauguration ceremony based on the theme ‘colors', the dignitaries lighted candles placed in the midst of five different colored bouquets each representing the different stages and relationships in human life. The inaugural ceremony was decorated by a theme song.

Dr. N Vinaya Hegde, Chancellor, Nitte University gave a comprehensive view on lifestyles by comparing and contrasting the lifestyles of the previous generation with that of the present in the Chief Guests' Address. He analyzed the roles played by parents, teachers, in inculcating values and building up the character and life style of individuals in the society. He concluded with a remark saying that the young men and women are the great ambassadors who can bring about changes in the society.

Later Rev. Fr. Joseph Rodrigues, the Rector in the Presidential speech said "Self sacrifice and service are the cardinal goals of education". He opined that separation from reality is the main reason for distress and advocated that wellbeing is the need of the hour. The vote of thanks was delivered by Mr. Prajwal, Student Co-ordinator.

The seminar focused on various issues related to lifestyles like Children's lifestyles: Boon or Bane?, Blue Planet: Wrecked by modern lifestyles, Lifestyles & Health: Eased or Diseased.

A panel discussion on "Adult lifestyles: Rated of Adulterated?" analyzed on the social fragmentation due to intolerance and hollow glamorous life dictated by media and fashions.

The Two-Day National Seminar was attended by Students and Staff of Various Social Works from around the country. NGO's and socially concerned individuals were also present.
