Delegation headed by Bishop meet governor

24 September 2009

A delegation headed by Bishop of Mangalore Diocese Aloysius Paul D'Souza, which met governor H R Bhardwaj here on Wednesday urged him to ensure that people in the state are able to exercise their constitutionally guaranteed rights.
The delegation expressed its concerns over certain impediments faced by people in the state not being able to do so, as well as violations of human rights as well. The delegation impressed upon the governor that it is the duty of all people to be able to freely preach and practice their religion. However, certain anti-social elements have created fear among God-fearing citizens, and they now are afraid to come to church, the Bishop said. In many instances, regular prayer services in churches are carried out under police protection, the Bishop said.

Observing that the state government had withdrawn cases filed against various individuals and organizations, the delegation said the government had failed to extend the same gesture to Christians, who were peacefully protesting attacks on their places of worship in many places in the state in September 2008. The delegation urged the governor to ensure that criminal cases against Christians were withdrawn forthwith.

The delegation also urged the governor to direct the government to ensure that people who were injured in the attacks on places of worship were given suitable compensation.

The minorities in the state should be given suitable protection and empowered to lead a dignified life, without fear and enjoy the constitutionally guaranteed rights, and the state should take necessary steps to ensure this eventuality, they urged.

The governor on his part assured the delegation that he would give necessary directions to the state government. The delegation comprised Fr William Menezes, public relations officer of the Diocese, Fr Onil D'Souza, lawyers M P Noronha, Ivan D'Souza, and Mariamma Thomas. Dakshina Kannada was the epicentre of attacks on Christian institutions last year.
